Perry delivers Vegas-worthy show with joyful intensity!!

OTTAWA — Another princess was in town last night — a pop princess with blue eyes and a goofball sense of humour, that is.
Katy Perry was given a royal welcome by 14,200 adoring fans — a sell-out — who crammed into Scotiabank Place for the concert.
About an hour before the show, Kori Sirrs, Caitlyn Martel and Celina Musta, three 15-year-old friends wearing Teenage Dream T-shirts, were outside the arena, painting “I love Katy Perry” on their legs.
“She’s got lots of great songs you can sing along to, yup,” said Kori. “We’re gonna stand on our seats and scream.”
Multitudes of young fans had the same idea.
“We’re gonna have fun tonight, right?” Perry said to a roar of approval.
Then she provided the glowstick-waving girls with a giddy sugar high that left them wrung out and rapturous.
The raven-haired singer began at a breakneck clip, ripping through Teenage Dream, followed by Hummingbird Heartbeat and Waking Up In Vegas.
It was the aural equivalent of wolfing down two handfuls of Sour Patch Kids, then gorging on a mound of Starburst and Banana Laffy Taffy.
“Because you are the capital of Canada, does that mean you have the sexiest boys?” Perry said to screams from the audience.
Then she invited a boy — shirtless — on stage. He introduced himself as Zack before trading a kiss on the cheek with Perry.
“Oh, God, I’m in so much trouble,” she quipped when Zack said he was 17.
What sounded like the entire crowd sang along to I Kissed A Girl, Perry’s first major hit.
Halfway through the show, she lowered the temperature with Katy’s Karoke — an acoustic set that featured cover versions of Rihanna’s Only Girl (In the World) and Jay-Z’s Big Pimpin’.
Floating across the top of the crowd on a cloud of candy floss — OK, a raised platform that moved with pulleys — Perry sang Thinking of You and thanked Canadians for, “Giving me all of my No. 1’s first.”
Then she cranked things up again with Hot N Cold and Last Friday Night (TGIF).
The set looked like it was dreamed up by a couple of confectioners after a tray of martinis — a mashup of The Wiz and The Nutcracker, with clouds and clouds of candy floss in the mix.
Throughout the show, Perry danced her naughty-and-nice routines with a joyful intensity.
She wore one whimsical costume after another, including a catwoman suit and one dress that sported large peppermint pinwheels on the bust.
“You Canadians don’t know how good you have it, she said after giving a shoutout to hometown heroine Alanis Morissette. “Sometimes I wish I could just stay.”
The show was a Vegas-worthy production, with Perry supported by five musicians, two backing singers and eight dancers. There were mimes, too.
On stage, Perry, 26, projects a woman who is fully aware of her power, her charms, and her self-worth: she is nobody’s doormat. ( oh here go hell come).
Given the steady pornification of pop — Rihanna’s creepy portrayal of sado-masochistic sex on her chart-topping S&M, for example — I’d say Perry is a fairly healthy embodiment of female empowerment.
About 30 or so lucky fans were picked to join Perry on stage and dance to a rollicking version of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). It was the sweetest moment of the night.
The crowd was on its feet for Perry’s encore — an extended California Gurls. The kids who loved that song in 2008 are likely 17 and older now.
Perry’s challenge as an artist will be to maintain her fan base as they grow up. If she outgrows her eyelash extensions, here’s betting she can do it.
